American football in Panama has grown steadily over the past few decades, supported by the country’s close ties to the United States and the presence of U.S. military bases in the 20th century. These early influences introduced the sport to local communities, sparking interest among young athletes. Today, while soccer and baseball remain dominant, football has carved out a niche as an emerging sport with a dedicated following.
The sport is organized under the Federación de Fútbol Americano de Panamá (FEDFUTAMPA), which oversees both youth and adult leagues across the country. The Liga de Fútbol Americano de Panamá (LFA Panamá) serves as one of the top leagues, featuring clubs that compete at a high level and provide opportunities for local athletes to develop their skills. Flag football has also become very popular in Panama, especially among younger players and women, serving as both a recreational sport and a gateway to tackle football.
Youth development is a central focus. Many schools and community programs have adopted flag football, teaching fundamentals like passing, catching, and teamwork in a safer and more accessible format. These programs have helped create a strong pipeline of athletes, some of whom transition to tackle football at the club level. Panama has even fielded competitive youth and women’s teams in international flag football tournaments, raising the country’s profile in the global football community.
International exposure has also played a key role. The popularity of the NFL in Panama has grown through broadcasts, streaming services, and social media, particularly around the Super Bowl, which attracts large audiences. Panamanian athletes have pursued opportunities abroad, with some earning spots in U.S. college programs. Their success has inspired local players and shown that football can provide educational and professional pathways.
Challenges remain, particularly in competing with more established sports for attention and resources. The cost of equipment and the lack of football-specific facilities are also barriers for many programs. However, the growth of flag football, strong community support, and international connections suggest that the sport will continue to expand. With a solid foundation in place, Panama is poised to play a larger role in the development of American football in Central America.
