USC Upstate Spartans Football

USC Upstate does not sponsor a traditional college football program, and the Spartans are not part of the FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III, or NAIA football map. That makes USC Upstate different from many South Carolina schools, but it also fits the university’s actual athletic path. The Spartans have built their identity through Division I non-football sports, first in the ASUN and now in the Big South Conference, with programs such as baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, golf, cross country, track and field, and volleyball carrying the school’s name.

Why USC Upstate Does Not Have Football

There is no long-lost USC Upstate Spartans football era to summarize. The school’s athletics history developed without varsity football as a central department anchor. That matters because football is not just another sport on a college budget. It requires a large roster, coaching staff, equipment, training infrastructure, game-day operations, travel planning, medical support, and either a stadium or a reliable home-field solution.

For USC Upstate, the more practical athletic model has been a broad Division I portfolio without football. That approach allows the school to compete regionally and nationally in sports that fit its facilities, conference structure, and recruiting footprint without taking on the scale of a football operation.

The Sports That Define USC Upstate Athletics

The Spartans’ modern identity is tied to NCAA Division I competition and Big South membership. USC Upstate moved from the ASUN Conference to the Big South beginning with the 2018–19 academic year, giving the school a regional conference home with other institutions across the Southeast.

Baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, golf, cross country, track and field, and volleyball do the athletic work that football does at some other schools: they create school visibility, conference rivalries, postseason opportunities, and alumni connection. Softball in particular has given the Spartans recent postseason visibility, while baseball and basketball provide familiar entry points for fans looking at USC Upstate athletics.

Football’s Future at USC Upstate

USC Upstate is entering the football conversation in a different way: women’s flag football. The university announced that it would add women’s flag football as a varsity sport beginning in 2026–27, making it part of a growing NCAA women’s sports movement rather than a traditional tackle-football expansion.

That distinction matters. Women’s flag football gives USC Upstate a football-related varsity pathway without requiring the institutional lift of launching men’s tackle football. For now, “USC Upstate Spartans football” is best understood through that future flag football addition and through the school’s broader non-football Division I identity.
